A Mountain of Mindfulness?

The first retreat I organized was an incredible experience with some of my dearest friends. While we all enjoyed ourselves, I was surprised to learn that many felt overwhelmed by the concept of practicing mindfulness. As working mothers, we juggled various responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, childcare, managing schedules, and balancing demanding careers. Finding time for yoga and self-care presented a significant challenge, and now I was introducing the idea of mindfulness to these women too! Some questioned, "I'm already struggling to keep up with everything, and now I'm expected to make time to be present?" "What if I don't want to be present when my teenager is upset and my toddler is having a tantrum?" I completely understood their concerns. Mindfulness seemed like an additional task on an already endless to-do list, resembling a daunting mountain to climb. Initially, I felt like I had failed as a retreat leader, believing I was adding more stress to their lives instead of relieving it. However, yoga isn't a quick fix for eliminating stress and anxiety; it's a practice that helps individuals recognize their body's signals to manage stress effectively. Stress isn't always negative; in fact, we intentionally stress our bodies physically and mentally during practice to observe our responses and train our minds to shift from fight or flight mode to relaxation. Realizing this, I took a deep breath and understood that I needed to create a supportive environment and remind these wonderful women that mindfulness isn't a competition, and there is no way to fail at being a mindful parent. Mindfulness is a valuable tool that can be refined on the mat and applied as a support system during challenging parenting moments, work issues, or overwhelming days. The journey of yoga and mindfulness is lifelong, filled with ups and downs, serene days, tumultuous storms, and yes, a few intimidating mountains. Growth often requires some discomfort, and we must navigate these challenges at our own pace, in a way that feels comfortable for us. Embracing mindfulness enables us to slow down when needed, providing a method for those seeking fulfillment in life. Here is a simple technique to incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine: Conduct a brief 10-20 second body scan before starting a meeting or a tough conversation. Pay attention to any physical sensations—Is your heart racing? Are you feeling queasy? Are you clenching your jaw or fists? Now, focus on your breath; take three deep breaths, exhaling stress and worry. Then, inhale deeply three times, welcoming calm confidence. By practicing this exercise, you engaged in mindfulness in less than a minute, transforming a perceived mountain into a manageable molehill. Congratulations on your mindful moment! Thank you for reading, and namaste, my friend.
