A Curious Journey - 20 Tips to Begin or Continue Your Yoga Practice

by Kristin Cambron Steele

Mindful Motions Yoga - Dallas

The first yoga class I attended was both exciting and a little daunting. As I looked around the room, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. I wondered if I could ever feel that comfortable in my own skin. Sound familiar? If you’re just starting your yoga journey, whether at Mindful Motions Yoga Studio or from the comfort of your home, you might have similar feelings. But let’s remember: yoga is not about perfection; it’s about being curious, open and enjoying the journey. Here are 20 tips to help you embark on your practice, all with a sense of humor and a supportive spirit.

1. Breathe Deeply

Breath is the foundation of yoga. It’s easy to forget in the hustle of life, but deep, mindful breathing can anchor you. Inhale calm, exhale stress—think of it as hitting the refresh button on your day.

2. Create Your Space

Whether you’re practicing at Mindful Motions or at home, find a space that feels inviting. It doesn’t have to be perfect—just somewhere you can take a moment for yourself. Bonus points for adding a cozy blanket or a calming candle!

3. Dress for Comfort

Wear what feels right for you. There’s no need for designer yoga gear. Whether it’s yoga pants, leggings, or your favorite oversized t-shirt, comfort is key. Just make sure it’s not something that restricts your movement—this isn’t the time for fashion over function!

4. Explore Different Styles

Yoga offers a variety of styles—Slow Flow,Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Yin, and more. Try a few different classes at Mindful Motions or online to see what resonates with you. Think of it as sampling different flavors until you find your favorite.

5. Start at Your Own Pace

Don’t feel pressured to go every single day or dive into advanced poses. Start with baby steps, maybe attending once a week or high energy classes. Remember, everyone was once a beginner. So be kind to yourself and take it one breath at a time.

6. Be Curious

Approach your practice with curiosity. Experiment with different poses and breathing techniques. Ask questions, explore how your body feels in each position, and be open to discovering something new about yourself along the way.

7. Follow a Class or Video

If you’re unsure where to start, look for a class at Mindful Motions or follow an online video. Choose instructors whose energy and teaching style resonate with you. The right guide can make all the difference!

8. Listen to Your Body

Your body communicates its needs, so listen closely. If a pose doesn’t feel right, modify it or take a break. Yoga isn’t a competition; it’s about tuning into yourself and respecting your limits.

9. Practice Mindfulness

Yoga encourages being present. As you practice, focus on your breath and bodily sensations. If your thoughts drift to your never-ending to-do list, gently guide your focus back to your practice. It’s all part of the journey!

10. Avoid Comparisons

It’s easy to get caught up in what others are doing. Remember, everyone is on their unique path. Celebrate your own progress, no matter how small. Your journey is valid, and comparison steals joy!

11. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water before and after your practice. Staying hydrated helps you feel your best, especially during a heated class. Trust me, you want to avoid feeling like a dried-up sponge!

12. Be Consistent

Try to practice regularly, even if it’s just one class a week on the same day at the same time. Consistency builds strength and flexibility. It also gives you a delightful excuse to wear those comfy yoga clothes more often!

13. Connect with Community

Whether it’s at Mindful Motions or online, joining a yoga community can provide support and motivation. Connecting with others on this journey can make it feel less isolating and more fun!

14. Embrace Awkward Moments

We all have those moments in yoga—whether it’s a wobbly pose or an unexpected sound. Rather than feeling embarrassed, find humor in it. After all, laughter is a wonderful part of the experience!

15. Don’t Stress About Alignment—Trust Your Teacher

While it’s important to have a basic understanding of alignment in yoga, don’t let it stress you out! The beauty of yoga lies in its diversity and the personal journey each practitioner undertakes. What’s essential is finding a teacher you trust—someone who can guide you safely and point out any movements or postures that might be risky. A good instructor will help you cultivate awareness of your body without overwhelming you with rules. Focus on the experience, listen to your body, and let your teacher support you in finding your own path to comfort and confidence on the mat!

16. Practice Gratitude

Before you begin, take a moment to appreciate your body and your ability to practice. A little gratitude can shift your mindset and set a positive tone for your session.

17. Gently Challenge Yourself

Once you feel comfortable, try to gently push your boundaries. Explore new poses, but do so at your own pace. Growth often requires stepping outside your comfort zone—just be kind to yourself along the way.

18. Accept the Journey

Yoga is a lifelong journey filled with ups and downs. Some days will feel fantastic, while others may be more challenging. Embrace each experience as part of your unique path.

19. Savor Savasana

Don’t skip Savasana! This final relaxation pose is where all your hard work integrates. Take a moment to lie back, close your eyes, and just be. It’s like a mini vacation for your mind and body.

20. Enjoy the Process

Most importantly, have fun! Yoga is meant to bring joy and peace to your life. So roll out your mat, embrace the little things, and allow yourself to enjoy each moment of your practice.
